According to social media accounts that BBC Verify has located that bear his identity, he has appealed for international warriors to travel to Ukraine in order to combat Russian forces.

Having never served in the military, Routh told the New York Times in 2023 that he had gone to Ukraine as soon as Russia invaded the country in 2022 in order to recruit Afghan warriors who had left the Taliban.
