In their pivotal Group D match of the 2018 T20 World Cup at the Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown on Thursday, Bangladesh's top all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan finally performed with the bat against the Netherlands after receiving a flurry of criticism.
The 37-year-old all-rounder blasted 159 for five in 20 overs on a field that looked decent. He hammered an unbeaten 46-ball 64, reaching his fifty off 38 deliveries.
In order to help Bangladesh achieve a competitive score, Shakib—who also became the eighth batter to reach the 800 run milestone in the T20 mega event—starred in three significant stands of 48, 41, and an uninterrupted 29 with Tanzid Hasan (35 off 26), Mahmudullah Riyad (25 off 21), and Jaker Ali
(14* off 7).
Although Shakib is used to receiving criticism, he was closely watched after Bangladesh's poster child performed poorly in the first two games of the major event. Shakib was only able to score eight runs in the Tigers' opening tournament match, a two-wicket victory over Sri Lanka, and three in the team's subsequent four-run loss to South Africa.
Shakib had been battling with the willow for some time now; his last T20I fifty came against Pakistan in a tri-nation series that also included hosts New Zealand in October 2022. However, it appeared as though he had allowed it to spread to his bowling, which is something he does naturally.
Such a show even attracted some harsh criticism.

Shakib bowled just one over against South Africa, marking the first time in his T20 career that he did so in a match where all 20 overs were completed. The team management's reluctance to restrict Shakib's overs against the Proteas was understandable given that he had given up 30 runs in three overs, including an over containing 16 runs, during the Sri Lankan encounter.
Such a show even attracted some harsh criticism.
But Shakib, as usual, turned things around yesterday, showing some assured strokeplay and game awareness, seemingly in response to Sehwag and his detractors. While batting with a strike rate of almost 140 and blasting nine boundaries, Shakib looked like a completely different player than he had in a while. He did witnessed a few deliveries fly off the edge of his willow for boundaries.
