India scores a major victory after establishing a lofty goal for Bangladesh.

Bangladesh had a strong start, but the Indians' astute catching and homegrown hero Ravichandran Ashwin's three wickets shook the visitors.

On the third day of the first Test between the two nations, India gave Bangladesh a massive 515 win target and then crushed them to 158-4 to seal a decisive victory on Saturday.

Bangladesh played well at first, but the Indians' astute catching and homegrown hero Ravichandran Ashwin's three wickets unsettled the visitors.
All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan (five) and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto (51), who needed a massive 357 runs to win, were in the middle when poor light prompted early stumping.
Prior to India declaring their second innings at 287-4, Shubman Gill hit an undefeated 119 and Rishabh Pant (109) slammed a century in his comeback test.

At the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, the hosts had already taken the lead after dismissing Bangladesh for 149 in their opening innings and taking a 227 lead.

When the graceful right-hander clobbered off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz for two sixes in an over to reach his fifty, Gill gave a clear indication of their goal.
In his maiden test following a tragic vehicle accident in late 2022, Pant reached his half-century with a more traditional approach—a single off the spinner.

Bangladesh missed an opportunity to break the stand when Shanto removed Pant when he reached 72.

Adding salt to the pain, Pant defeated Gill to the hundred mark by hitting Shakib for consecutive fours in the left-arm spinner's next over.
In his sixth test century, Pant hit 13 fours and 4 sixes before passing the ball back to Mehidy.
But Gill was unbreakable, his fifth Test hundred comprising ten fours and four sixes.

Bangladeshi openers Shadman Islam (35) and Zakir Hasan (33) decided to counterattack in their 62-run partnership after being faced with a difficult assignment in their second innings.

After Ashwin, who scored a match-winning century in the first innings, removed Zakir with a brilliant left-handed catch in the slips, Yashasvi Jaiswal delivered a three-wicket burst.

KL and Gill Shadman and Mushfiqur Rahim were dismissed by Rahul after diving catches, and Mominul Haque lost his middle stump to the cunning off-spinner.

Shanto played his natural aggressive game, reaching his fifty with his third six as wickets fell all around him.
